Programme Manager, Myanmar

Saferworld is an independent international organisation working to prevent violent conflict and build safer lives. We work with local people affected by conflict to improve their safety and sense of security. We do this by supporting effective policies and practices through advocacy, research and policy development, and through supporting the actions of others. We have programmes in around 20 countries and territories across Africa, the Middle East, Asia and Europe and have over 150 staff. The Myanmar programme started in 2012, and established an office in Yangon in June 2015.

You will manage a new 2½ year DFID-funded community safety project focused on southeast Myanmar (predominantly Kayin State). The aim is to improve the situation of vulnerable communities by improving their ability to cope with and respond to conflict and security risks, with a particular focus on marginalised and/or at-risk groups. The project includes a focus on strengthening the security of women and increasing their participation in decision-making processes. The project will work closely with civil society organisations, local communities, and relevant authorities.

Saferworld has another on-going strand of work focused on conflict sensitivity, especially in relation to natural resource extraction, infrastructure projects, and development interventions in conflict-affected areas. It is expected that this strand of work will expand, and the post-holder will be expected to contribute to programme development in this area, representing Saferworld as necessary in interactions with relevant authorities and other stakeholders.

This position is an exciting opportunity to play a leading role in establishing Saferworld’s country office and a multi-faceted programme. As the programme portfolio develops, the post-holder will contribute to Saferworld’s evolving strategy in Myanmar and to the creation of a dynamic team.

The successful candidate will be a Myanmar national with a strong understanding of the conflict context of key stakeholders and have a minimum of 5 years’ experience of working in international development, peacebuilding or related areas. S/he will have demonstrable project management experience and of strategic programme development processes.
